Merino wool

Our merino yarn is a very special type of wool that comes from Australian merino sheep.  Their wool is softer and finer than regular wool and is therefore often used for underwear and finer garments.  The merino wool available here is naturally 100% mulesing-free, which guarantees that the sheep have been reared and raised responsibly.  Wool is more popular today than it has ever been.  It has several sought-after properties, which is why it is more widely used in more and more garments.  Merino wool’s most useful property is its ability to absorb moisture and remain warm to wear.  Unlike cotton, merino wool will never chill you if you get wet, or start sweating and then have a break to cool down – and this is why many outdoor enthusiasts have started wearing this amazing wool more and more.

Merino wool yarn is useful and versatile

If you are looking for a type of wool suitable for both warm and cool climates, merino wool is the perfect choice.  Merino wool regulates your body temperature according to your surrounding environment, thus keeping you warm in cool conditions and dispersing heat away from your body in warmer conditions.  This makes merino wool suitable for many different types of garments.

Merino wool yarn is silky and smooth when worn next to the skin, and therefore it is suitable for children and babies to wear.  It is light and gentle and ‘scratch-free’, and is odourless, even if you’re physically active.  Therefore, if you knit a soft sweater for your child, or warm under-garments for your grandchild using merino wool, they will undoubtedly be a huge hit.   Merino wool is especially suitable for babies.  It adapts to small changes in body temperature, which is a great advantage when the infants themselves cannot say whether they are too hot or too cold.

Merino yarn in all colours

On this page you can find a wide selection of merino wool yarns, which are often on special offer.  We have merino wool in a variety of colours, so you can mix and match them exactly as you like.  Use glowing, deep shades for knitting something wonderful for the winter season, and fresher, lighter colours for the spring and summer.

If it is not merino wool you are looking for this time, you can also find many other types of wool at STOFF & STIL.  We have baby wool, fine wool, organic wool and several other types.  However, bear in mind that each type of wool has its own specific properties, and that wool is not just wool.

Tips for the treatment and maintenance of merino wool

  • Follow the instructions on the band the yarn is wrapped with
  • Always wash wool by hand or on your washing machine’s wool programme, and preferably use wool detergent
  • Do not use fabric softener
  • Do not wash it with other garments that have hard surfaces, for example a zip
  • Allow it to self-dry so that it retains its original shape

Merino wool has some elastic properties and therefore it can easily change shape, if for example you hang it on a hanger.  For this reason, it is best to let woollen clothes lie flat while they dry.
